Senate Bill 3804, the Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act, passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee today. It is also known as the “Internet Blacklist” bill. Remember the good ol’ days of Senator Joseph McCarthy? Those blacklists were a smashing success, weren’t they? Not so much. I will never understand why Hollywood, the silent sponsor of this legislation, is so very fond of blacklisting.

When bills like these come along, I always find it informative to check out just how much money each of the key members of Congress are paid by industrial interests to sponsor such legislation. If you are so inclined, you can easily contact your Senators regarding this legislation through Open Congress’ easy to use interface.

All Creative Work Is Derivative

This is the second “minute meme” from Nina Paley for Question Copyright. Be sure to check out her walkthrough of her “Free Culture Lunch” process.

I’ve been using Nina Paley as the standard bearer for the modern notion of copyright in my classes. Some students have readily embraced the concept and others have pushed back (hard) that the corporatist copyright ethos will never die. But every single person admits that the system is broken. It has been a fascinating conversation and one that would have been much less lively without Nina’s example. Most important, though, is the fact that all of the students are questioning copyright. That is a victory in and of itself.

Copying Is Not Theft - let the re-recording begin!

That’s right, kiddies, copying is not theft! Time to forget the propaganda that you are fed every time you pop a dvd into the player. Oh, it is still a crime thanks to our draconian Digital Millennium Copyright Act, but it is not theft, so don’t feel like you are stealing, because you aren’t. Case in point: Nina Paley. Watch below as she describes how she makes a good living as a digital artist living without copyright. She is an exemplar for the digital age. After the jump, you can actually watch her feature film that she created and gave to the world, free of charge, via the Creative Commons’ Share Alike license.
